Capturx for ArcGIS

Digital Pen and Plain PaperCapturx for ArcGIS is an extension for ESRI ArcGIS® 9.x that enables personnel to manage map data in digital form on a computer and as paper maps in the field. First Capturx for ArcGIS is used to print maps from ArcGIS Desktop that contain the Anoto pattern. In the field, personnel write directly on the digital paper map, or create new features by selecting them from the legend and positioning them on the map. As they mark up the map, the Penx digital pen accurately records the position of the pen as it moves across the map. When the pen is inserted in the docking station, Capturx automatically updates the ArcGIS geodatabase. There is no need to retype the annotations on maps or worry about which information should be entered first. Using the Anoto pattern as a guide, Capturx accurately integrates the data into the ArcGIS map.

Feature layers are used to differentiate input from multiple people. By selecting layers to view, you can view and share the right information with the right people.

Personnel can now mark up and modify any digital paper map printed from ArcGIS. Because Capturx instantly converts the writing to digital form, the process of data reentry is eliminated. Also, training time is minimized because personnel can continue to benefit from the advantages of working with paper maps. They use the same form factor with which they have been accustomed, and carry no more and perhaps less weight than before. Unlike PDAs and tablet PCs, digital paper maps can be viewed in bright sun. And Adapx outdoor-ready digital paper products built around Rite-in-the-Rain weather-resistant notebooks and inks can be used in inclement weather. The resulting information gathering and storage system is not only easy to implement and manage, it is redundantly fail safe, because the information can be stored both digitally and as paper.

From the user’s perspective:

  • The utility lineman can continue to use existing map books.
  • The geologist can collaborate with peers in any location, marking geological formations on large format digital paper maps.
  • The patrol leader can communicate routes and plans with headquarters using sketches on a digital paper map or photograph.
  • The field engineer can document conditions of roads and bridges directly on a paper map.
  • The real estate agent can sketch potential subdivisions on a plat map.
  • The landscape architect can sketch a garden design on site.
